Two years ago while zapping through several channels on television, I found a music channel which showed possible future bangers. One of them was “Crystallize”. I was touched by the combination of classical music with the pumping sound of Dubstep. It was love from the first sight. By that time I didn’t know anything about the artist, Lindsey Stirling. Soon I found other songs of her album “Lindsey Stirling” on YouTube. “Elements” fascinated me. Her combinations of classic compositions, modern Dubstep rhythms and progressive dancing are amazing. As her website describes accurately, “Lindsey has created a new music world where the romance of Celtic folk music and modern classical meet the infectious energy of dance and electronica.” True words – nothing to add here. When record labels turned her down because what she did (and still does!) was not marketable, she didn’t bury her head in the sand. Rejection simply strengthened Stirling’s resolve to be herself.
Yesterday, 24.10.2014 I attended her concert in Zurich. Beside the fantastic musical experience, she gave insights what particular songs were about and furthermore gave some motivational speeches to the crowd. “Everything from the artwork to the music shares a cohesive message that I hope will inspire others to push their own boundaries.” she said. Her words were all about that being different is okay. Being different is actually a good thing. It means you’re brave enough to be yourself, no matter what others think or want you to be. Being different is what makes us special. Well said. This thoughts aren’t new though, as Coco Chanel said “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken” is a famous quote of Oscar Wilde. But being different doesn’t mean being a douche, so let’s quote Apple head designer Jonathan Ive:
“It’s very easy to be different, but very difficult to be better.”
