First of all, it depends on what you have planned to do during your holidays and when you are travelling. In June which is the start of the rainy season, my packing list looked like:

Documents

  • Plane ticket
  • Passport (and also a copy so you doesn’t need the original. The copy is valid in Costa Rica)
  • Credit card
  • US Dollars
  • Driving license (if you plan to take a rental car)

Basics

  • 4 x shorts
  • 2 x long pants
  • 3 x tank tops
  • 3 x T-shirts
  • 1 x shirt
  • underwear
  • 6 x socks (including 1 pair of hiking socks)
  • 1 x rain coat
  • 2 x swimming trunks
  • 1 x towel
  • 1 x Flip Flops
  • 1 x sun hat
  • 2 x sun glasses

Toiletries

  • sun cream (with high SPF, especially when you want to go surfing)
  • mosquito repellent (you can also buy there the strong ones)
  • toothbrush and toothpaste
  • deodorant
  • razor
  • showering gel
  • toilet paper / baby wipes (when in the jungle :-))

First aid kit

  • band-aid
  • anti-diarrheal agent (you never know)
  • sanitizer
  • aspirin
  • medicine to cure sickness
  • cream for mosquito bites
  • Aloe Vera gel (relieves the pain and speeds the healing of sunburn)

Gadgets

  • GoPro Hero 5 Black with selfie-stick
  • electric converters (not necessary if you are from Canada or the U.S.)
  • travel guide
  • powerbank

Outdoor

  • 1 x hiking boots
  • flashlight
  • jacket (mostly you won’t need it, but could be necessary at higher elevation)
  • 1 x water proof backpack (keep things dry during rain)
